Me diga: O que vêm a sua mente quando você pensa em música nativa?? O tradicional tambor nativo?? Flauta?? ...Bem, certamente é no que pensamos primeiro mas eu quero hoje compartilhar com  vocês algo mais, algo diferente e moderno feito por cantores e bandas nativas norte americanas que apesar de já terem um caminho trilhado lá fora e serem já bem reconhecidos, estou certa de que aqui pra nós muitos deles ainda são novidades...Então vamos lá, aqui vai uma seleção dos mais legais que encontrei até o momento...Hoje vamos ouvir música!!


Brule & Airo ( Nação Lakota  )

Opera rock com mistura de flauta e tradicional tambor. Um estilo de música muito original e as apresentações de Brule & Airo contam com dancarinos tradicionais também. Fascinante!! O grupo já vendeu mais de um milhão de cópias e possuem inúmeros prêmios e indicações.

Hoje o grupo conta com os seguintes integrantes: Paul LaRoche nos teclados; Nicole LaRoche ( filha de Paul ) flauta ; Shane LaRoche ( filho de Paul ) guitarra; Vlasis na percussão; Lowery Begay no tambor tradicional e Kurt Olson na bateria.

Paul, Nicole e Shane são membros da Reserva Lakota de Lower Brule e Lowery é membro da Nação Diné. Os tradicionais dancarinos incluem: Lowery Begay, Garan Coons, Chris Estes, douglas Scholfield, Linda Thompson & Josette Wahwasuck

Clay Spears ( Nação Lakota ) e Darren Jeffre Band

Se este sobrenome te soa familiar é porque você já conhece seus irmãos Michael e Eddie Spears, atores reconhecidíssimos  do cenário Nativo Americano hoje em dia. E caso você ainda não saiba quem são os irmãos Spears, leia os artigos relacionados aos dois neste blog.  É uma familia inteira de Talentos heim!! Que benção...

Clay Spears assim como seus irmãos é membro da Reserva Lakota Lower Brule. Porém enquanto seus irmãos entraram para o mundo cinematográfico muito cedo, Clay preferiu o caminho da música. Desde quando o conheci eu disse que mostraria seu trabalho dentro dos meus projetos , o musico Lakota. Mas não é só por causa disso que ele está aqui neste artigo hoje e sim porque ele é um músico pra lá de talentoso. Olhem só isso: Ele toca viola, harmonica, guitarra e fez parte da banda de Darren Geffre tocando baixo. Será que esqueci de mencionar algum instrumento?!?!?!  Darren Geffree é também da Nação Sioux porém da Reserva BlackFeet , Montana. Darren tem uma longa estrada já percorrida com muitas indicações e prêmios recebidos.

The Plateros ( Nação Navajo )

Levi Platero é o lider de uma banda familiar de rock e são todos de Tohajiilee, Novo México e fazem parte da  Nação Navajo. Eles tocam rock blues e Levi embora muito jovem é considerado um dos melhores guitarristas da atualidade além de ser um fuefo, só é uma pena que ele tenha cortado aquele cabelo ma-ra-vi-lho-so. A banda apareceu no cenário em 2004 e de lá pra cá já tiveram muitas indicações e prêmios em vários festivais Nativos.

George Leach ( Cree from Canada )

Não tem como pensar em George Leach sem se lembrar de seu mais famoso personagem, Loved by the Buffalo da série Into the West ( tá bom, todo mundo já sabe que é minha produção preferida, sempre !! ).  Mas o fato é que vê-lo cantar é uma grande surpresa e mais ainda por verificar que George é um multi talento porque também é artista plático e se dedica na criação de cerâmicas com uma coleção de esplêndido design.

Originalmente uma banda formada por familiares, da Nação Nakoda em Dakota do Sul, berço de talentos do rock, hoje a banda tendo como lider Mato Nanji é como ele mesmo diz uma nova banda de rock, literalmente. Uma vez que os outros integrantes da banda saíram para seguir outros projetos, Indigenous agora conta com nova formação junto com Mato Nanji, porém mantendo a mesma qualidade e um ótimo som!!

Ghostland Observatory

Contando apenas com dois integrantes: Thomas Turner : com sua parafernália eletrônica e Aaron Behrens: vocal . Juntos criaram um som rock pop pra lá de original. Fora a presença de palco sensacional de Aaron e o  show de lazer ultra moderno completam o cenário de todas as suas apresentações....Esses dois rapazes estão arrazando !! Só digo o seguinte: Eu quero !! Eu quero!!

Black Fire ( Nação Navajo)

Outra banda familiar saída da Nação Navajo, composta por  dois irmãos ( Klee Benally e clayson Benally ) e uma irmã ( Jeneda Benally ). Black fire faz um som punk-rock engajado em questões socio-politica da Nação Nativa. O som rock and roll da banda reflete esperança, liberdade e as barreiras do mundo atual com mensagens relativas a opressão, recolocação de povos indigenas, genocidio, violencia doméstica e direitos humanos . Fazem uma mistura de punk rock com o som tradicional nativo. Nas suas apresentações combinam com uma apresentação de seu grupo de dança tradicional nativo.

You guys tell me: What does come to your mind when you think about Native Songs?? Traditional Native hand drums?? Flute???..Well, Surely we can have it, but I am pretty excited to show everyone something else, something  modern and different made by Native Singers and Bands...I am pretty sure that not everyone is aware of it so I´ve decided to start sharing a selection of good native music here in this blog .Here it goes a way awesome one. Let´s get to know the first hit !!

Clay Spears ( Lower Brule Member ) and Darren Geffre Band ( from Alberdeen, SD )

Yeah, his last name sounds familiar for you because Clay is Michael and Eddie´s brother and he is also a member of Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, SD. While his brothers got into movies Clay  followed the path of music. What a talenty family !! A true blessing I could say...

But it is not just because of it he is here now, it is because he is a very talenty native musician, look at this: He can play viola, harmonica, guitar and  takes part of Dareen  Geffre Band playing bass (Oh my! did I forget to mention any  other instrument ?!?!? ). They play a rock pop music and have  cd's out. So If you guys are going to walk around South Dakoka you can check out their shedule and see their gig ( and do not forget to post a comment about it here ) or buy one of the cd´s and enjoy it.  Their music is way awesome !!!

About Darreen Geffre :

Born and raised in Aberdeen, South Dakota and also a proud member of Blackfeet Tribe in Montana, Darren Geffre started writing music and lyrics when he was 12 years old. Since the, he has pushed his pop/rock music all over the globe.

Pine Ridge Reservation - Ultimate news!

 

I have been preparing articles about Lakota Reservations to show people everywhere the reality of these places. Normaly we outsiders ( I am including on it ) have a different and romantic idea about the reservations as many people are fascinated by Native culture, religion, art and history. Thus, I always thought it is very important to know that these people have been struggling for years to keep their anscestors legacy alive.

Today I decided to use my space here to repass a message from Joseph Brings Plenty -  Chairman of Cheyenne River Reservation – the Eagle Buttle – about a very sad fact that is happening in Porcupine – Pine Ridge Reservation. All the history, culture and art, I will tell here in another moment. For me as for many people is a pity to know things like this are happening there. They are the ones who tell us to take care and respect the elders, it´s really sad when we see some Lakota values can be lost by the result of having many years of approaching to “white man” society and ways of life.

 

 

 

I am now repassing below some notes written by Joseph Brings Plenty to help him to spread the word. He kindly told me that these are the things he has heard from the elders, the ones who had courage to step forward to make their voices loud but he told me there are many others very scared to do the same. He also told me some great “warriors” are supporting the cause in this moment. Here are all updates and as soon as he tells me something new I will spread it here.

Elderly Take over in Porcupine SD

Say a prayer for Elders down in Porcupine SD, they are requesting for changes on how the elderly distribution center is being conducted in Porcupine. My father, Enoch Brings Plenty Sr., was recently voted in as a president for the elderly board in which has over view of the center. 4 years the issues were reported, nothing was done regarding elderly concern, this past friday, the elders took over the facility in hopes to have their concerns addressed. Good to see some Lakota still have fight in them.. Aho!!!

I was just called by my younger brother, Louie Brings Plenty, the update that personal from the Oglala Sioux Tribe and the chief of police is there, they are informing the elders to remove themselves from the center or they will be removed by force. How hard is it to listen the elders, these issues were reported for over 4 yrs, the issues compiled into one huge issue. When the people speak, listen, how hard is that to do. If the tribe can negotiate with the elders, that would be helpful, akicita used to be peacemakers long ago, now being used to physically threaten elders, some whom cannot walk very long or stand, shameful! Pray for them elders, pray for the young men and women who are standing with them in this ordeal, created by a system that isn't responsive to human need but seems to only respond in a political nature!

This makes me angry, the true Lakota suffered at the hands of the government, rape, murder, deciet, crimes upon crimes, now our nation turns toward it's own people in a hostile manner, our culture and ways were of honor and bravery, if the police department has intentions of removing these elders, in a physical nature, there is no honor!! Me and my sons are preparing to go help these elders, to show them that their ideas are good and they know a thing or two about life. Makes me want to cry when I think about the past and how in present day, these cruel intentions are still carried out on our people.. Lakota people you have to know who you are and where you come from, tunkasila is with you..

"Our Elders stood their ground, they told the police they weren't intimidated, if they wanted to remove them, they would have to beat them up bloody before they could get them out of the elderly center" my aunty just called and told me this, there was paddy wagons and cop car's, a show of force to show the elders they were going to be taken with force, but they stood their ground! Wopila Tanka to the prayers, wopila to those young men and women who stood with the Elder, Wopila to the strength of our Elders, this is how to be in the face of danger, brave, although they understood the outcome they stared the threat in the face and said do your worst! Most of all, Wopila to Tunkasila! I'm very happy! I pray OST resolves this with the Elders in a good way.. Waste' Yelo!!!

Tokala Clifford ( Em Português )

Ator - Oglala Lakota / Sioux Nation

Tokala é um ator  descendente do clã de Crazy Horse, a O’uh’pe, de Oglala Lakota. Para  quem não sabe, reserva de Pine Ridge. E por ser de lá é que imagino a força de vontade de Tokala por ter nascido neste lugar e ter se tornado a pessoa que é.

Tokala já tem minha total admiração só por isso. Por coincidência, antes de fazer este post eu assisti pela milésima vez o filme Dreamkeeper, é tão inspirador… Tokala faz parte de uma das estórias contadas no filme. No papel de Red Deer, um aspirante a Medicine Man. Acho que Tokala mostrou um pouco da sua veia para comédia, mas assim, uma comédia tão encantadora que da pra assistir várias vezes sem nunca se cansar.



Como Red Deer em Dreamkeeper

Outro filme que eu assisti e gostei demais da sua atuação foi Rez Bomb, não tão encantador como Dreamkeeper mas muito necessário por mostrar a realidade da juventude em Pine Ridge. É triste ver o que acontece a uma cultura e tradição tão pura quando é forçada a perder suas raízes. Rez Bomb é forte, mas é real, muito real. Há outros filmes em que ele teve participação, porém bem menos expressiva, o que é uma pena.

Seu nome é Tokala Hehaka Sapa e por causa disso ele é geralmente citado como Tokala Black Elk ou Gerald Tokala Clifford. Como eu sempre procuro mostrar aqui, achei algumas informações muito importantes sobre ele. Tokala foi uma das pessoas mais jovens a representar seu povo no Senado Americano. Quando representou a tribo Oglala Sioux tinha apenas 13 anos. Acho que  isso o fez muito ciente de seu papél social, que podemos ver nele hoje em dia.

 

Ele tem sido grande ativista em esforços para ajudar a juventude de sua nação a resgatar sua cultura e idioma. Tokala também é grande defensor de um dos maiores simbolos de sua nação: os cavalos, e utiliza sua voz para ajudar na preversação dos Cavalos selvagens que estão em grande perigo neste momento nos Estados Unidos.

Para quem fala um pouquinho de inglês, leiam o artigo de Tokala Clifford em inglês, lá eu anexei um texto feito por ele, e um video também. 

 

Com certeza há muito mais o que se falar desse moço comum, saído de uma reserva de Dakota do sul, e diga-se a mais pobre e mais dificil reserva Lakota. Mas por enquanto é tudo o que eu consegui sobre ele, e sob sua autorização. Alias Tokala foi exatamente o que eu esperava ( sim, eu também tenho minhas expectativas de fã ), quando finalmente consegui pedir sua autorização para escrever sobre ele: “ É uma honra – disse ele . “

 I am not sure if everyone knows but I am Brazilian and  despite of it I´ve decided to create a blog to talk about Native American Nations for some special reasons. Although I was thinking about sharing something very special from my country since people who usually read this blog is from everywhere in the world. I am very proud of showing someone very important from my Country, someone whose work has been making a huge difference for many Brazilian Indigene nations and this is the kind of person that I really love writing about as you can see in all my articles. Every article here is about someone who is making some difference in the world in different ways....I really hope everyone enjoy it !

Arapoty Institute

Kaká Verá is a Brazilian Native writer, enviromentalist and advisor of Tupy Guarani ways , ecology and sustainability. He has been working as a Native speaker and giving courses about these issues for more than 15 years in different institutions and in his own place called Arapoty Institute. As a lecturer Kaká has already been to different countries always talking about native culture, his ancestors wisdom, ecology and social responsability.

His parents belonged to Kaitité and Kaxixó tribes. When they moved to São Paulo he started his path as Indigene voice and leadership by helping his neighbors Guaranis with their issue about lands location. As he was able to know the white society ways he tried to help the community to get support to strenghten its culture and beliefs.

Living among the Guaranis he was taught by the Medicine Man ( pajé ) Alcebíades Verá who gave his name and kaká embraced  the mission to keep on supporting Guarani´s culture and tradition. Kaká is not a Medicine Man  and  he kindly asked me not to call him like this but as a person who works with social changing, a social worker. He has been working together with leaders and activists always supporting ecology issues along his life.

Kaká Verá is the founder of Arapoty Institute in São Paulo which has as Mission to spread the Indigene ancestor wisdon to get support for Indian communities, strenghten the culture and develop a  sustainable way for life. Also it´s a place to show Indian culture to non-native people thru gatherings and courses. Kaká has created many pedagogic projects to introduce indigene culture inspired in respect and connection with nature with no misunderstood to non native people, as a way to approache people to indigene roots.

Also he has published 5 books about Indian History and culture and two of them is now recognized and used in schools as a way to teach the real history about indian nations. His Institute got an international award for developing a social changing thru his social projects.

The latest news I got from him is that we will have Deadliest Warrior on SPIKE TV in July and Kuster´s Last Man on History channel also will be out by the same time.

Rick is also working with the photographer cherrilyn Silva in his first picture book for German publication.

Agora sim!! Aqui está o menino de ouro do mundo cinematográfico nativo Norte Americano. Eddie é com certeza uma das personalidades mais queridas e arrasta uma multidão de fãns ( enlouquedidas ) e não é pra menos, ele é tudo isso e muito mais!!

Tenho certeza de que ainda ouviremos falar muito de Eddie Spears pois sua carreira está em plena ascensão e cá pra nós quem já assistiu algum filme dele saberá do que estou falando, e quem ainda não viu é só verificar a listagem que coloco no final do artigo. Assistam!!! Eddie é um ator fabuloso e apaixonante.

Eddie é da Reserva Lakota Lower Brule, Dakota do Sul e assim como seu irmão mais velho Michael Spears estréiou bem cedo no mundo cinematográfico, com 10 anos  na produção Geronimo e hoje tem uma lista enorme de produções em que fez parte, algumas como protagonista como em Black Cloud e Dreamkeeper.

Eddie esteve no papel de Quanah Parker, uma das maiores figuras históricas na série Comanche Moon, mas infelizmente para mim e muitos outros que a assistiram, a série não fez justiça ao seu papel e Eddie teve apenas uma pequena participação.

 Um pena eu diria, pois através de pesquizas pude saber o quanto ele se preparou para isso. Mas isso só nos mostra o quão dedicado ele é a sua carreira e por isso tem tanto sucesso em suas atuações. Sua tragetória é brilhante e só faz crescer cada vez mais.

Recentemente Eddie junto com seu irmão Michael estiveram envolvidos em várias produções todas para serem lançadas em 2011( o que manterei atualizado aqui, CLARO!!! ).

Álias somente nessas novas produções eles passaram a trabalhar juntos, o que era uma solicitação crescente do público que os acompanha. Sendo que até então a única produção em que trabalharam junto foi Into the West, mas estavam em núcleos diferentes.

Seguindo os passos de seu irmão Michael Spears, Eddie também trabalha como palestrante sobre questões Indígenas, culturais e meio ambiente e funciona como um mentor para a juventude de sua comunidade. E juntos também participam de Pow wows ( os festivais Nativos que acontecem por quase todo os Estados Unidos )

Trabalhando na implantação do Native Wind na reserva

 Eles trabalham muito para construir uma ponte entre a cultura nativa e não nativa. Isto é saber exatamente seu papel no mundo e na sociedade, é muito mais do que uma boa atuação em filmes. Acho que é de familia, leiam aqui mesmo o artigo sobre seu irmão Michael Spears e saberão do que estou falando.
